Fact-Sheet

I: Background:

The Christian Empowerment and Sustainable Program (CESP), incorporated is an organization which emerged from a biblical philosophy that says “The people perish for lack of knowledge” (Hos. 4:6) was established in 1994.

Mission Statement

CESP as a non-governmental, non-political, non-profitable, Para-church Organization, is committed to developing the human resource; promoting peace at the community level; empowering families and institutions, and effecting non-violent social change though training.

III: Vision-Statement

CESP envisions a society of peace, and opportunity for self sustainability.

Objectives:

· To provide an enabling environment through community participatory action-oriented training that fosters reconciliation, development, unity and peace at the community level.

· To run a mobile training centers and provides short-term profession training that enhances the capacity of Individuals, Communities, Institutions and Organizations.


IV: PROGRAM FOCUS/ACTIVITIES

A. Community Empowerment

Overall Objective

To provide an enabling environment through community participatory action-oriented training that fosters reconciliation, development, unity and peace at the community level.

Program Activities:

CESP works with communities in their community development programs. More specific roles of CESP include the provision of training opportunities that help:
· Communities to identify analyze and develop common approaches to problems confronting their personal life and the community at large.
§ Youth to develop Life skills ;
§ Children develop life skills and understand their rights and responsibilities(Child Rights)
§ community leader develop project development and management skills;
§ Community to develop conflict transformation skills;


3. The Approach

CESP is more engaged in bottom to top approach in its community empowerment program. CESP enters in communities based upon request by community leaders, community structures, institutions and organizations. The intervention stages includes assessment of needs, helping the requesting community, groups or institution to develop problem solving approach, seeking needed resources and implementing the problem solving plan in participatory approach.

4. Progress in the Community Empowerment program.

CESP, since it establishment in 1994, has worked with number of national and international organizations including United Nations (UN) agencies in addressing problems confronting communities.

· In 1995, CESP obtained a grant from Blessing International (an American Based Para-church organization) which facilitated the training of One hundred fifty community peace animators. The Community Peace Animators (CPA) were trained and assigned in communities and schools to help provide psychosocial services to war affected people and including children and women.

· In 1997, CESP was contracted by the Lutheran World Federation/Word Services Trauma Healing Program to trained teachers, parents and church leaders in conflict management, family life and Child Rights. The two-year project which trained 500 persons was funded by the church of Sweden.
· In 2005, CESP was contracted by Development Alternative (DAI) Incorporated to train 600 ex-combatants and war affected people in Psychosocial helping skills, Business management skills including record keeping. The target beneficiaries were trainees in the Liberia Community Infrastructure Program (LCIP) skills training and swam processing. The Project which covers Nimba, Bong, and Grand Gedeh counties in the Republic of Liberia was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),
· In 2005, CESP entered into agreement with UNICEF-Liberia to serve as implementing partner for the social reintegration program of Children Associated with Fighting Forces (Ex-CAFF).

CESP is implementing one of the options of the reintegration programs code name “Community Education and Investment Program (CEIP)”.work with government agencies, schools, and communities in Margibi County, catering to 200 EX-CAFF and building the capacity of teachers, school authorities, Youth groups and community welfare communities in child protection issues; and providing educational supplies including books, materials etc. to 20 schools in that county.
· In 2006, CESP entered into agreement with UNDP-Liberia to serve as implementing partner for the DDRRR program in Liberia. CESP is implementing Skills Program in Lofa County.

A.CESP-Human Resource Development Center
Overall Objective:
To run a mobile training centers and provides short-term profession training that enhances the capacity of Individuals, Communities, Institutions and Organizations

2. Program Activities:

This Center which was established in 1996 runs short-term professional training programs in Social Work, and Management ; utilizes action-oriented participatory and dimensional techniques that help trainees to function adequately within a given social and trans-cultural societies.

3. The Approach

CESP runs mobile training Center and conduct:
· three-month training in counseling with emphasis on Trauma, Guidance, Traditional, & Religious Counseling;
· Nine-month training in Social Work with emphasis on Elements of Social work, Community Development, Training Methodology, Project Writing, Management, Psychosocial services, documentation, protocol of international organization, Human Rights, Gender base violence;
· One-month training in human resource management with emphasis on personal and modern office management, Training methodology, Project designing, management& Elements of social work, and
· Five-month training in International Relations

4. Progress:
With respect to progress, the Center has trained more than one (1000) men and women who are now working in private and governmental agencies, national and international organizations and agencies of the United Nations.
